Estudio y Aprovechamiento de Productos Naturales Marinos y Frutas de Colombia

GrupLac

Colombia ranks among the ten most biologically diverse countries in the world. This rich biodiversity is reflected in a vast chemical diversity that remains largely unexplored. Natural products derived from this diversity hold immense value, not only from an economic perspective but also due to their potential to address contemporary societal challenges, such as human, animal, and plant diseases; to serve as sources of new materials; and to provide applications in fields like cosmetics. Within this context, the primary objectives of our research group are as follows: 1. To generate chemical and technological knowledge on the compounds derived from Colombia’s biodiversity, including terrestrial plants, microorganisms, marine organisms, and invertebrates.

1) To generate chemical and technological knowledge on the compounds derived from Colombia’s biodiversity, including terrestrial plants, microorganisms, marine organisms, and invertebrates. 2) To assess the economic potential of the species under investigation, exploring whether their natural products can be utilized by industries such as phytomedicines, biocontrol agents, nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals, and as additives in products like paints. 3) To contribute to the training of high-level researchers in the country and foster the development of research institutions.

Our expertise includes the isolation and identification of organic molecules (e.g., terpenes, peptides, polyketides) from natural sources, including microorganisms. This experience spans from highly polar to volatile molecules. We employ advanced tools for compound identification through dereplication, as well as de novo methods (1D and 2D NMR), including the determination of relative and absolute stereochemistry. Recently, we have incorporated techniques such as metabolomics (using NMR and mass spectrometry) and mass spectrometry-based molecular networking to prioritize organisms for identification. We also correlate these data with biological activity, enabling us to identify the compounds responsible for the observed activity

Research topics

Marine Natural Products: Our research focuses on the chemistry of octocorals, sponges, and algae, with an emphasis on discovering compounds with biological activity. Currently, we employ metabolomic tools to aid in this exploration.

Phytochemistry: We aim to develop phytomedicines, collaborating with pharmaceutical researchers to study species such as Passiflora, Hypericum, and Physalis.

Biotechnology: We are investigating the chemical diversity offered by marine microorganisms, particularly as a source of compounds capable of controlling phytopathogens. Our work has encompassed the study of cyanobacteria, Firmicutes, actinobacteria, and fungi.

Synthesis and Semisynthesis: We are focused on obtaining semisynthetic derivatives that demonstrate enhanced biological activity compared to compounds isolated from natural sources. We also seek to identify the structural modifications responsible for these improvements in activity
